Apologies to Masaoka Shiki

I.

Kraft macaroni

Autumn cheeses golden hue ---

Grace, please use your fork

II.

Two scoops in a cone

Her summer prayers are answered

Ice cream, sidewalk, tears

III.

Please just try a bite

The treat you long for awaits

No bites, all is lost

IV.

The whining must stop

You will eat the things we eat --

Failure, more fish sticks

V.

Bright red sippy-cup

Cooling winter grape Hi-C

Juice sprays out your nose

Ahh, yes, word pictures of parenthood (or babysitterhood, as I've experienced many of these, too). Very evocative.

Thank you, Champurrado!

Yes, those great culinary treats of the under-ten set, macaroni & cheese and fish sticks. Where are the hot dogs, another very important food in the pantheon . . . . ?

For some reason, hot dogs just don't do anything for her. Maybe that's good, no?

I'd say the absence of hotdogs is good. I've cleverly had the whole mac & cheese be made from scratch with actual real cheese that has flavor. That's a triumph. Oh, and she's eating carrots now.

Short story. Older kids had no chance for nutrition. One of them still won't eat fruit. She's now 16. College bound one will eat bacon, cream cheese bagels and limited types of camp food only. (Thankfully, they both eat tamales). Youngest one's mom swore her kid would not be like that. Not only will she not eat anything besides Kraft M & C, fish sticks, chicken fingers and all things sugar, she mocks us when we urge her to eat "normal" food.

Champ: That story must never be repeated. Foilkid has just started eating carrots, cole slaw, and other vegetable type items while visiting Canada and her Mormor. My kicker is that all this will help her be the great karate black belt-tennis player-skater-swimmer-dancer-soccer player-and superheroine she knows she can be. So we can't let her know your two eldest became great hockey players without fruits or vegetables. Uh-uh.
